SuffolkTransit #741 was a 1987 Gillig Phantom which was assigned to Sunrise Coach Lines. (Sister Company to Sunrise Busses)

Suffolk Transit #310 was a 1982 Chance RT52 which was assigned to Hampton Jitney.

DEFECT #1 - EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Description
The rear lights did not have reflective devices installed.  This does not comply with fmvss no.  108, lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment.

Consequence


Corrective Action
Additional rear red reflective devices will be installed.

DEFECT #2 - STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:PUMP

Description
The power steering pump is improperly calibrated and has insufficient power steering fluid flow for the operation of the steering system.

Consequence
Insufficient fluid flow to the steering system can resultin increased steering effort, loss of steering control, and a possible accident.

Corrective Action
Correct the calibration of the power steering pump.

System: steering.vehicle description: transit coach under 30 feet in length.note: this situation was remedied by chance coach in july 1991.

DEFECT #3 - STEERING:COLUMN

Description
The welds on a bracket which attaches the tilt- telescoping steering column to the firewall under the dash are defective and could fail.

Consequence
Failure of the attachment bracket can result in a lossof steering control and a possible vehicle accident.

Corrective Action
A new, improved bracket will be installed on all affected units.
