DEFECT #1 - TRAILER HITCHES

Description
Vehicle description: dump trailers with a bolt-on pintle hitch mounting plate.  Cracks can develop in the hitch mounting plate leading to failure of the assembly.

Consequence
Failure of the mounting plate can result in the rear trailer disconnecting from the lead trailer, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Corrective Action
Dealers will reinforce the rear cross member and mount the pintle hitch directly to the rear cross member eliminating the bolt-on pintle hitch mounting plate.

Notes
Owner notification is expected to begin in june 1998.owners who take their trailers to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact red river at 1-800-762-5557.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).
