Red 2008 Astra XR

Not an Opel Astra, but a Saturn Astra - I took this picture in New Jersey with my flip phone, and I was as surprised to find an Astra still going strong after fifteen years as of this writing as you might be to realize that Astra were sold in the U.S., however briefly.

Saturn replaced the domestically built Ion compact with the Belgium-built Opel Astra ti get a leg up in the compat market - odd, because Saturn had been set up by General Motors to prove that it could build as good a car as the Astra itself in the U.S. However, in 2008, GM's centennial year, Saturn was on its last legs as GM careened toward bankruptcy, an the Astra turned to not to be the bestseller it was in Europe.

The 2009 model year was the last year for the Saturn Astra in America . . . and the Saturn brand. When GM went Chapter 11, Saturn got eighty-sixed.

This is a fine example of the H, or third, generation of the Astra in hatchback coupe form, in XR trim - which this racy car look even racier. (Lotsa leather inside.) The engine is a 1.8-liter SMPI Ecotec inline four producing 138 horses.
