The sixth generation BMW 5 Series was designed by Jacek Fröhlich with a more prominent upright split kidney grille and the absence of the "Bangle butt" rear-end styling of its E60 predecessor. Externally, the car is a more traditional BMWesque design; a far more sober effort after the highly controversial E60. Though the car has been described as to bland.
The F10 shares a platform with the BMW 7 Series (F01) and has been described as a downsized-7 Series in contrast to its E60 predecessor which was regarded as an upsized 3 Series. Improvements over the E60-generation 5-series include a front dual ball joint short-long arm suspension, and rear multilink suspension, making it more refined but heavier. While the E60 had an aluminum front chassis structure from firewall forward (which provided perfect balance but was expensive to repair), the F10 has returned to the conventional steel monocoque.
The car was updated in 2011 for the 2012 model year

DEFECT #1 - FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:FUEL GAUGE SYSTEM

Posted on: 2010-07-22
Description
Bmw is recalling certain 2010 and 2011 5-series and 5-series gran turismo passenger vehicles manufactured from january 12 through july 1, 2010.  The vehicle's fuel level sensor within the fuel tank can become wedged against the tank.

Consequence
If this occurs, the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster would display a larger amount of fuel than was actually in the tank.  As a result, if the tank became empty, the vehicle could stall increasing the risk of a crash.

Corrective Action
Bmw will notify owners and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge.  The safety recall began on october 18, 2010.  Owners may contact bmw at 1-800-525-7417.
