Oldsmobile introduced the 98 as the divisions flagship model badge for the 1940-42 model years, resuming the name after hostilities in 1946, the 98 was to remain an Oldsmobile model over twelve generations until 1996.

The eighth generation was introduced in 1965, All 1965 Olds models featured all new styling and engineering, but retained the larger C-body shared with Cadillac and Buick Electra in contrast with the B-body used in the Oldsmobile 88. The Ninety-Eight featured many of the lines found on 88s but with more squared off styling. The exclusive Ninety-Eight wheelbase had five body styles. The Custom Sport Coupe was gone and the 4-door 6-window body styles were replaced with 4-door 4-window body styles. The Luxury Sedan was no longer a hardtop but featured a more luxurious interior along with more standard amenities than the Town Sedan such as power seats. Most Ninety-Eight Luxury Sedans also had vinyl roofs, Along with the transmission and redesigned platform, the engine was also new for 1965: a 425 cu in (7.0 L) Super Rocket V8 that was more powerful and of a more efficient design than the 394 cu in (6.5 L) Rocket V8 previously used, yet lighter in weight.

For 1967 there were five Ninety-Eight body styles available. For 1967, all GM full-size cars received a mid cycle freshening that featured fuller body panels. Olds 98s received a three part front grille made up of a centre prow flanked on either side by headlight pods.

Not sure which model this is

Model wise, there was more name juggling. The Delmont 88 was introduced for 1967 and produced for just two years, replacing both the Jetstar 88 and Dynamic 88 model lines. The Delmont featured the 330 V8 as standard and the 425 V8 as an option in 1967 and the new stroked "Rocket 455" version of the same engine in 1968. The 425 was standard on the Delta 88.

In 1967 an Oldsmobile Delmont 88 driven by Senator Teddy Kennedy crashed while leaving a party on Chappaquiddick Island, the car went through the Dike Bridge, which did not have a guardrail at that time. Kennedy lost control and crashed in the Poucha Pond inlet, a tidal channel. Kennedy escaped from the overturned vehicle, but his passenger 28 year old Mary Jo Kopechne was trapped and drowned. Kennedy did not report the accident to authorities until the next morning, by which time Kopechne's body had already been discovered. A week after the incident, Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was given a suspended sentence of two months in jail

DEFECT #1 - VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL

Posted on: 1988-05-18
Description
Excessive accelerator cable friction may restrict the cables free movement between the accelerator pedal and the throttle body.

Consequence
This could prevent throttle from returning to closed(idle) position when accelerator pedal is released; thus, engine speed wouldnot decrease, and loss of accelerator control could result in an accident.

Corrective Action
Replace accelerator cable.

DEFECT #2 - ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Posted on: 1987-09-03
Description
An in line fusible link may melt down and cause a fire.

Consequence
The in line fusible link located in the area of theplastic windshield washer bottle bracket may, under a high resistance load, melt down and ignite the washer bottle bracket resulting in an enginecompartment fire.

Corrective Action
The windshield washer bottle bracket will be replaced.

DEFECT #3 - SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK

Posted on: 1987-06-24
Description
The anti lock brake system (abs) pressure/warning switch may exhibit brake fluid seepage which eventually can lead to loss of the brake system hydraulic pump motor.  Additionally, the hydraulic pump motor and abs electrical relays may have been exposed to water contamination during vehicle assembly.  This condition can cause loss of the hydraulic pump motor and/or loss of the abs function.

Consequence
Loss of the hydraulic pump motor would result in a totalloss of rear brakes as well as power assist to the front brakes.  The red brakewarning light would illuminate and stay on.  If this warning is not heeded, aloss of rear brakes at a time when minimum stopping distance is required couldresult in a vehicle crash.  An inoperative abs electrical relay could causeloss of the abs function, but normal power assisted braking would be retained.the amber anti lock warning light would illuminate and stay on.

Corrective Action
The abs and hydraulic pump motor electrical relays and 30 amp fuses will be replaced.  In addition, the hydraulic pump motor assembly and pressure/warning switch will be inspected and, if required, replaced.

DEFECT #4 - FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Posted on: 2006-05-22
Description
Certain replacement fuel filters, fram brand name p/n g3727, with date codes x52911 through x60801 sequentially or x600141 and a mexico country or origin marking on the fuel filter housing manufactured from october 18, 2005, through march 21, 2006, sold for use on the vehicles listed above and on certain school buses.  (to see the school bus engine sizes, click on document search and then bus applications).  The connector on the fuel filter was not manufactured to honeywell's specification.  As a result, the o-ring may not seat correctly on the fuel line.

Corrective Action
Honeywell will notify owners and replace the fuel filters free of charge.  The recall began on october 18, 2006.  Owners may contact fram customer service at 1-800-890-2075 (option 1).
