Metrobus' X4 in the 1200 block of H St., NW c. 1980, with the Town Theater sign visible in the background - slide found on eBay.

The bus is a MAN SG 220, the first articulated bus to be used by Metro.

DEFECT #1 - STRUCTURE

Description
A crack may develop in the rear end carrier arms that are the load carrying members attaching the two sections of the articulated bus.

Consequence


Corrective Action
Install reinforcement brackets to prevent cracking of the carrier arms.

Notes
System: rear carrier arms.vehicle description: articulated buses.consequences of defect: such cracks could eventually progress to point wherecarrier arms would break.  If break does occur, the rear section would have nodirectional control which could result in an accident.
