For those who follow my photo-stream you will be aware that events tend to find me. Earlier in the week I was walking to work and unfortunately there was a fatal apartment fire nearby that I shot.

Yesterday (Friday May 9th) in the late afternoon, a friend of mine, Chetan Sarva (http://www.flickr.com/photos/csarva/ and I were out on the west-side of midtown NYC near the Javits Center shooting from where 11th avenue is elevated. It was in the middle of a small nor'easter so it was very rainy, windy, and cold. We had already been out for about an hour & half so everthing was wet and we felt miserable since the shoot opportunities were minimal at best then a fire engine came racing by...

Checking out the situation I noticed a small fire below coming from where the buses go to park and get cleaned just off of the west-side highway. Up on 11th avenue there are walls so you cannot see below since the walls are about 8 feet high. Seeing a sudden eruption of thick black smoke and boom we decided to go down to 30th street and check it out.

This image was shot just after I arrived and was using a garage entrance to shield the lens from the rain when all of a sudden there was a loud boom and thick black smoke started to rush towards me. I took the shot and was then enveloped in the smoke.

The mechanics then decided that it was time to close the garage door (they had covered their faces with towels)...

The one interesting FDNY note here is that Engine 26 is one of four Ferrara 1000gpm/500 pumper tank trucks in the department.

No one was injured or killed thankfully.
